We know that children’s personal, social and emotional development is crucial for children to lead healthy and happy lives, and is fundamental to their cognitive development. We ensure all classes focus on personal, social and emotional development (PSHE) throughout the day both incidentally and as part of taught sessions.
At Belmont we ensure we build strong, warm and supportive relationships with the children in our care as these support them them in learning how to understand their own feelings and those of others.
Children are supported to manage emotions (all learn the Zones of Regulation, see below for more information), develop a positive sense of self, set themselves simple goals, have confidence in their own abilities, to persist and wait for what they want and direct attention as necessary.
Through adult modelling and expectations, children learn how to look after their bodies, including healthy eating, and manage personal needs independently. Through supported interaction with other children, they learn how to make good friendships, co-operate and resolve conflicts peaceably. These attributes will provide a secure platform from which children can achieve at school and in later life
Social development: Use a range of social skills; participate in the local community; appreciate diverse viewpoints; participate, volunteer and cooperate; resolve conflict; engage with the 'British values' of democracy, the rule of law, liberty, respect and tolerance.
Cultural development: Appreciate cultural influences; appreciate the role of Britain's parliamentary system; participate in culture opportunities; understand, accept, respect and celebrate diversity.
We ensure that our ethos and assemblies link to these principles. For example:
Anti-bullying and Inclusion themed learning week
Child-led fundraising for the local community
Road safety demonstrations
Police, MP & fire brigade visits
Smart school council (see pupil voice for more detail)
...and much more!
Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE)
PSHE teaches the fundamental building blocks and characteristics of positive relationships, with particular reference to friendships, family relationships, and relationships with other children and with adults to enable children make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships.
Aims of PSHE
Through teaching PSHE, we aim to equip our children with the information, skills and values to have safe, fulfilling relationships. Quality HRE promotes the core values of respect, love and care. It also provides the opportunity for children and young people to reflect on their own attitudes and beliefs and those of their peers and others. This is consistent with our values and ethos as a school
It aims to teach children about five themes:
Families and people who care for me
Caring friendships
Respectful relationships
Online relationships
Being safe
Children cover the following themes, taught by class teachers and focusing on one per half term linked to the class topic:
Relationships
Valuing Difference
Keeping Safe
Rights and Responsibilities
Change
The Infants uses SCARF and Think Equal resources to support our teaching in the Infants. Think Equal is a global initiative which calls for a system change in education, to end the discriminatory mindset and the cycle of violence across our world and ensure positive life outcomes for our children. Our Programmes - Think Equal
The Junior School uses the 'Jigsaw' scheme of work to deliver the PSHE curriculum. To find out more amount the scheme, there is a Parents and Carers Leaflet that explains Jigsaw's 'Mindful approach to PSHE.
