Belmont Infant & Junior Schools are proud to maintain a high standard of active travel within our community – and to have achieved GOLD accreditation. This award recognises our sustained commitment to promoting healthy, safe and sustainable travel choices for children, staff and families.
Our schools are part of an exclusive group of schools across London that have achieved the prestigious Gold Travel for Life Accreditation, demonstrating the significant impact we are making in reducing car use and encouraging healthier, greener ways of travelling.
We embed active travel into daily school life through a wide range of initiatives that encourage children and families to walk, cycle and use public transport confidently and safely:
Daily walking culture – Most families walk to school, supported by clear messaging, safe routes and regular reminders about the benefits of active travel.
Walk to School Weeks – We take part in borough‑wide and national campaigns, celebrating classes with the highest participation.
The Belmont Marathon – Our whole‑school running challenge encourages children to complete the distance of a marathon over several weeks, promoting fitness, stamina and enjoyment of movement.
Cycling training and Bikeability – Pupils in KS2 receive high‑quality cycle training, learning road safety, bike handling and independent travel skills.
Scooter parking – We have dedicated scooter parking encourages families to choose wheels over cars.
TFL-supported workshops – We work closely with Transport for London to deliver sessions on safe travel, public transport use, air quality and environmental impact.
Junior Travel Ambassadors – Children help lead active travel campaigns, promote safe behaviours and share key messages across the school.
Air quality and road safety education – Assemblies, class lessons and community campaigns help children understand how their choices improve local air quality and reduce congestion.
Car‑free days and reduced engine idling – We actively discourage car use, promote car‑free alternatives and work with families to reduce idling outside school.
Strong partnership with parents – We communicate regularly about safe routes, walking buses, and the benefits of active travel for wellbeing and the environment.
Together, these actions create a culture where walking, cycling and public transport are the norm, helping children develop lifelong healthy habits and contributing to a cleaner, safer local environment.
